Getting Ready for an Oversized Move

Oversized moves in Jackson Hole require more planning than a standard residential move. A piano that needs to come down a spiral staircase, a hot tub that has to clear a narrow side gate, a gun safe on a third floor with no lift access: each of these is a logistics problem before it is a lifting problem. Planning the approach, sourcing the right equipment, and managing access and parking are our job. We handle all of that, and in 2026, with new builds and high-value properties continuing to come to market across Teton County, oversized moves are something we plan for every week.

What makes a meaningful difference is knowing the specifics of your property and your items in advance. The sections below cover what we take care of, what we need to know ahead of time, and the small number of things we ask of clients directly before we arrive.

Driveway and Access

We plan the parking and loading approach based on what you tell us about your property. For most jobs across Jackson Hole and Teton County, we confirm the access details before we arrive and bring the right truck for the driveway. Some properties in Teton Village, Wilson, and the more rural parts of the valley require a shorter vehicle or a staged loading approach. Knowing that in advance means we plan for it rather than adapt to it on the morning.

The one thing we ask of clients on this front: for winter moves, clear snow from the full width of the driveway and apply sand or salt to any icy patches before we arrive. A loaded truck navigating an icy grade is a preventable problem, and heavy items being carried over an ice-covered surface adds risk to the crew and the item. That part is straightforward to sort in advance and makes a real difference.

Hallways, Stairways, and Interior Access

Working out whether a large item can navigate your staircase, doorframes, and hallways is part of what we do before the move. If you share photos or dimensions of any tight passages, we can tell you in advance whether the planned approach will work and what equipment or technique we will use.

Standard interior doorframes are 32 inches wide, but many homes in Jackson Hole, particularly older builds and custom properties, vary from that. A staircase with a half-landing turn, a low ceiling at the bottom of a flight, or a doorframe narrower than the item going through it: these are all solvable, but they need to be part of the plan before moving day.

It helps to remove wall decorations close to the path of travel before we arrive. They get knocked more easily than people expect when a large item is being angled through a tight space, and clearing them takes a few minutes but saves potential damage.

In 2026, with more custom builds and renovated properties across the valley, we are seeing more of these access challenges than ever. All solvable, but all need to be in the plan before moving day.

Tell Us About Heavy and Oversized Items in Advance

The equipment and crew we bring depends on what we are moving. Tell us about any oversized or unusually heavy items before the move date and we will plan the job around them. This is the most useful thing you can do ahead of an oversized move.

Items that require specific planning include:

  • Grand pianos and upright pianos. A grand piano can weigh between 500 and 1,000 pounds and requires a piano board, specialist dollies, and a crew experienced in tipping and manoeuvring without damaging the legs, lid, or instrument. We move pianos regularly across Jackson Hole and Teton County.
  • Gun safes. Large residential safes weigh anywhere from 400 to over 1,000 pounds. The right approach depends on the floor type, the staircase, and the access at both ends. We bring the equipment suited to the specific job.
  • Hot tubs. Even empty, most hot tubs weigh between 500 and 900 pounds. Planning the route through the yard, around the house, and onto the truck is our job. There are also a few preparation steps we ask of clients specifically, covered in the section below.
  • Large aquariums. These require complete draining before we arrive.
  • Industrial appliances, large workshop equipment, and commercial-grade items.

Call us and describe what you have. We have probably moved it before and can tell you exactly what the job involves and how we approach it.

Oversized loads may require permits through the Wyoming Department of Transportation — we handle the coordination so you do not have to.

Prepare Hot Tubs Specifically

Hot tubs deserve their own section because the preparation work is more involved than most other oversized items.

Before moving day:

Drain the Tub Completely
Use a submersible pump for speed, then use a wet-dry vacuum on the remaining water in the pipes and jets. A hot tub with water remaining in the plumbing weighs significantly more and can cause damage if the water shifts during transport.

Disconnect Power
Turn off the breaker supplying the tub. If the tub is hardwired rather than plugged in, have a qualified electrician handle the disconnection before moving day.

Pack Accessories
Remove the cover, steps, and any loose accessories, and pack or label them separately.

Dry the Tub
Allow the interior to dry fully before the move.

Tell us the dimensions of the tub and describe the access route from where it currently sits to where the truck will be parked. In properties across Jackson Hole and Teton County, the route from a backyard or deck to the truck is often the most complex part of a hot tub move: narrow side gates, elevated decks, soft ground or gravel paths that require plywood walkways. We plan for all of these, but we need the specifics in advance.

Equipment and Crew

For oversized and heavy items, we bring the right equipment: heavy-duty dollies, piano boards, ratchet straps, lifting aids, and protective padding. What we bring is determined by what you tell us about the item and the access during the planning conversation.

For items on upper floors, in basements with tight stairwells, or in locations with no direct ground-level access, we work out the technique before moving day. If photos or dimensions of the access would help us plan more accurately, we will ask for them. We would rather have that conversation in advance than make decisions on arrival.

Parking and Loading

We handle parking and loading across Jackson Hole in 2026, and for large or heavy items we position the truck to keep carry distances short and work safely between the vehicle and the entrance. If a permit is needed for a large truck on a particular street or shared driveway in Jackson Hole, we can advise on what is typically required in specific neighbourhoods and factor that into the plan.

For properties where the truck cannot park directly at the entrance, we adjust the loading approach accordingly. This is something we discuss during the planning conversation, not something that needs to be worked out on moving day.

The more we know about the job before we arrive, the better we can plan it. Oversized items handled well are a matter of the right equipment, the right crew size, and a clear picture of the access at your property. That is what the planning conversation is for.
