Before your Jackson Hole move, it is worth knowing exactly what we can and cannot take. This is not a long list of caveats. It is practical information that helps you plan what comes with us, what needs specialist handling, and what needs to go another route entirely.
The restrictions that exist across the moving industry are largely based on safety regulations from the Department of Transportation and FMCSA, which govern what can legally be transported in a commercial moving truck. Some are company-specific policies based on liability. Either way, knowing them before moving day means no surprises on the day.
What we can move:
Furniture
All furniture: sofas, beds, tables, dressers, wooden pieces, modular systems, wardrobes, and bookcases. We disassemble and reassemble where needed, and everything is wrapped before it leaves the house. For high-value or antique pieces, let us know when you book so we can plan the right materials and approach.
Appliances
Refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, and other large appliances. One important note: we do not disconnect or reconnect gas lines, water connections, or other utility hookups. Those need to be handled by a plumber or utility professional before we arrive. The appliance should be fully disconnected, drained where applicable, and ready to move when we get there.
Boxes and Household Items
Packed boxes, books, clothing, kitchenware, and general household items. Pack and label boxes before we arrive, or ask about our packing services when you book. For guidance on how to pack effectively, read our post on essential packing tips. Properly packed boxes protect the contents and make the load faster and safer for everyone.
Electronics
Flat-screen TVs, computers, audio equipment, home theatre systems, and other electronics. Use original packaging if you have it. If not, we can pad and wrap electronics for transport. Electronics are sensitive to temperature extremes, which matters for moves in and out of Jackson Hole during winter. Let us know what you have when you book and we will make sure the right materials are on the truck.
Pianos and Specialty Instruments
We move pianos and large instruments regularly across Jackson Hole and Teton County. Upright pianos typically weigh between 300 and 600 pounds; grand pianos between 500 and 1,000 pounds. Moving them safely requires a piano board, specialist dollies, and a crew that knows the technique. Let us know when you book so we can plan the right crew size and approach for your specific instrument.
Outdoor Equipment
Garden tools, grills, patio furniture, lawn equipment, and outdoor gear. Before moving day, remove propane tanks and drain any fuel from petrol-powered equipment such as lawnmowers or generators. Clean off excess dirt and debris. We cannot transport propane, fuel, or other flammable materials, so those need to be dealt with before we arrive.
Oversized and Heavy Items
Gun safes, hot tubs, large aquariums, and other oversized or unusually heavy items. These require advance notice so we can plan the right equipment and crew. For detail on what that preparation involves, read our post on getting ready for an oversized move.
What we cannot move:
Hazardous Materials
We do not transport flammable, explosive, corrosive, or otherwise hazardous materials. This is a legal requirement under DOT regulations, not just a company policy. The category includes:
- Propane tanks and other compressed gas canisters
- Petrol, diesel, and other fuels
- Paint, paint thinner, and solvents
- Household cleaning chemicals
- Pesticides and fertilizers
- Aerosol cans
- Fireworks and ammunition
For disposal of hazardous materials before your move, contact Teton County’s waste disposal services for guidance on how to handle items that cannot go in standard rubbish collection.
Perishable Food and Plants
Perishable food needs to travel with you, be used up, or be donated in the days before the move. Plan for this in the week before moving day rather than leaving it to the morning.
Plants are worth noting specifically for long-distance and interstate moves. Many states have agricultural restrictions on plants transported across state lines to prevent the spread of invasive pests and species. For a move into or out of Jackson Hole that crosses state lines, plants generally need to travel in a personal vehicle or be rehomed before the move. For a local move within Teton County, this is less of a concern, but plants still need to travel with you rather than in the truck.
Furniture and household items we cannot transport can be donated to Teton Habitat ReStore.
For hazardous materials, contact Teton County Solid Waste & Recycling for proper disposal guidance.
Pets
We do not transport pets. Moving trucks cannot provide the ventilation, temperature control, or care that animals require. Arrange pet travel separately, whether that is with you in a personal vehicle, by air with an approved carrier, or through a specialist pet transport service.
Valuables and Important Documents
We do not transport pets. Moving trucks cannot provide the ventilation, temperature control, or care that animals requireJewelry, cash, passports, financial documents, tax records, wills, birth certificates, and personal heirlooms should travel with you, not in the truck. These items are either irreplaceable if lost or unsuitable for standard moving liability coverage. Keep them with you on moving day in a bag or case that you control directly.. Arrange pet travel separately, whether that is with you in a personal vehicle, by air with an approved carrier, or through a specialist pet transport service.
Medical Equipment
Specialist medical equipment that requires specific handling, climate conditions, or regulatory compliance is outside what we transport. If you have medical equipment to move, speak with your healthcare provider or equipment supplier about how to coordinate it.
If you have a specific item you are not sure about, call us before moving day. We will give you a straight answer about whether we can take it, how to prepare it, or what alternatives make sense. We Lift Things handles moves across Jackson Hole and Teton County. Call us or request a quote and we can walk you through what your specific move involves.
